Here’s one for all you math and play-on-words nerds out there. March 14th is coming, and I can’t think of a better time to whip out the pie crust and have some fun. I will not be limiting these recipes to sweet treats. There are several savory pie recipes out there and several more not-quite-a-pie-but-close-enough-to-fudge-it recipes. You might not be able to have a 3.14 every day of the 365 without repeating, but you will probably get closer than you think. I, however, will be presenting five of my favorites.
In my first recipe post, Five Autumn Recipes for Busy Writers, I explained a little about why I am creating recipe posts rather than just focusing on writing. If you haven’t read that post, now is a good time to do so.
In this post, as before, I will link directly to websites where I found recipes. Simply click on the recipe title to go to the recipe’s source website.
Now, without any further delay, let’s get to the crust of the matter. (Groan all you want. I have more bad puns where that came from.)
First, we have a hardy dish that is definitely stretching the definition of “pie” but it is delicious and filling as well as a good vegetarian substitute for the classic Shepherd’s pie. It might not be the most beautiful pie ever, but who says beauty is everything.
Here are the alterations I made:
Instead of using nutritional yeast, I diced and sautéed 8 oz of mushrooms
I also added a small squirt of Dijon mustard.

This recipe has been in my stash for years. The origin is unknown. Click the link to go to the recipe page.
As you can see from the picture, there can sometimes be more filling than crust. Simply make a small batch of crust and line an oven safe dish. Then, add the filling. Either way, it cooks and tastes the same.
I eat vegetarian, so I tend to alter recipes where I can. This is an excellent example. Simply substitute liquid smoke for the bacon. Make sure you caramelize the onions. It turns them a mix of sweet and savory that makes you come back for more.

If you can’t judge a book by its cover why should a pie have to be visually pleasing to be tasty? This pie doesn’t brag. It simply delivers.

I know. A quiche isn’t a pie, but it’s still good, and it looks like one.
Again, to go meatless, all you need to do is substitute liquid smoke for the bacon.
Bonus Recipe!

Did you think I would show you all these pies and not give you the recipe for the crust? What kind of person do you think I am?
