This informational book by Tami Lehman-Wilzig and illustrated by Vicki Wehrman is a wonderful view of the unique traditions of Jews who live in various countries as they celebrate the festival of dedication. The opportunity to take a look at what these traditions mean to each community is something to grasp as an opportunity for deeper understanding of the holiday, and Jewish life in general, as well as Jewish live around the world.
Hanukkah Around the World presents tales of Hanukkah celebrations from the viewpoint of children. These children take part in their traditions and help the reader learn more about the unique cultures of Jews in that part of the world. The stories are kept short and sweet, giving a strong focus to a particular aspect of the Hanukkah experience. The illustrations are simple and calm. They help give a peaceful wonder to the tales.
There is one downfall I would like to mention. There was a recipe which had an incorrect ingredient amount. It is probably a typo, but it is very disheartening to attempt a new recipe in an effort to enjoy a different take on a tradition and get a very erroneous result. Adults, keep an eye out and double-check the recipes before making them with your children to avoid unnecessary disappointment.
With all things considered, I give this book four stars.
