This photo picture book by Kathy Hoopmann is a beautiful tribute, engendering acceptance and giving excellent insight to the world of an Autistic person. Through the lens of catdom, the reader is allowed to peer beyond preconceived ideas and consider the traits of Autism without the knee-jerk concept of what is “normal.” In this way, those with Autism become nothing more or less than unique individuals.
The words chosen by the author create a simple, quiet tone. Information is given in a direct manner, but is presented with such ease that it becomes a friendly conversation without any attempt to speak down to the reader as the author guides us through how the traits of Autism can present themselves in everyday life.
Unlike some other books on Autism, there is no tone of judgment against those with Autism, nor is there any attempt to apologize for them. This book is a gentle champion for those on the spectrum, attempting to build understanding and bridge the gaps created by our modern society.
The photos present cats in poses and activities that touch the heart, making the traits of Autism deeply understandable. Readers of any age can enjoy the visual appeal of the feline antics, again making this book welcoming for all.
After reading too many books and watching too many documentaries and movies which claim to champion neurotypical individuals but, in reality, seem to present neurodivergence in a negative light, this book gave me hope that there is acceptance available for those on the spectrum, not because it’s trendy or because it makes people feel good to say they empathize, but because acceptance is simply reasonable.
I give this book five stars, and that is not enough to express how strongly I recommend it.
